How to Install Hytale Mods (Players & Server Owners)
Complete guide to installing Hytale mods. Where to download them, how the server-side system works, and step-by-step installation for players and server owners.
Hytale mods work differently than you’d expect. There’s no Forge, no Fabric, and no client-side mods at all. Everything runs server-side, and players get mods automatically when they join a modded server. No downloads, no mod loaders, no compatibility headaches.
Two weeks after Hytale’s launch, the mod ecosystem already has over 2,000 mods on CurseForge. Below: where to get them, how to install them, and what makes Hytale’s modding system different.

How Hytale Modding Works
This is the big thing to understand: Hytale modding is server-side only.
In Minecraft, you install mods on your own computer. In Hytale, mods live on the server. When you join a modded server, the game automatically downloads and applies whatever mods that server is running. Leave the server, and those mods are gone. Join a different server with different mods, and those sync instead.
What that means in practice:
- No mod loaders needed. No Forge, no Fabric, no version matching.
- Players don’t install anything. Mods sync automatically on join.
- No client mods. No shaders, resource packs, or UI tweaks on your end.
- Singleplayer works the same way. It runs a local server under the hood.
The Two Main Types
Packs bundle data and art assets together. These include new recipes, custom loot tables, 3D models, textures, and sounds. Most mods on CurseForge are packs. No coding required to create them.
Plugins are written in Java and run on the server. They have full access to Hytale’s API, so they can change game logic, add economy systems, create minigames, or build admin tools. If you’ve used Bukkit or Paper plugins for Minecraft servers, it’s similar.
Where to Download Hytale Mods
CurseForge is the official mod platform. Hypixel Studios partnered with them directly, so it’s the main hub for discovering and downloading mods.
The catalog started with about 85 mods on launch day (January 13, 2026) and crossed 2,000 within the first week. You’ll find everything from new weapons and building tools to economy plugins and custom server types.
Other places to find mods:
- HytaleModding.dev has community documentation and some mod listings
- Reddit (r/Hytale) regularly features mod showcases
- Discord servers for specific mod projects
CurseForge is where you should start. It’s the most organized and has the largest selection.
How to Install Hytale Mods
Quick answer: it depends on who you are.
| You are… | What to do |
|---|---|
| Player joining a server | Nothing. Mods sync automatically when you connect. |
| Playing singleplayer | Use the CurseForge app or install manually (details below) |
| Running a server | Use the CurseForge app or install manually (details below) |
For Players (Multiplayer)
You don’t install anything. Join a server that runs mods and they download automatically. Leave the server and they’re gone. No setup required.
For Singleplayer
Singleplayer runs a local server under the hood, so mods work the same way as on a dedicated server. Two methods:
Method 1: CurseForge App (Easiest)
- Install the CurseForge app
- Select Hytale as your game
- Browse or search for mods and click Install
- Hit Run Game
The app handles file placement and dependencies for you.
Method 2: Manual Install
- Download the mod
.zipfrom CurseForge - Drop it into
%appdata%/Hytale/UserData/Mods/ - Open the game, right-click your world, and enable the mod
Tip: Want mods on only one world? Place files in saves/[worldname]/mods (lowercase m) instead. Mods in that folder only apply to that specific world.
For Server Owners
Two methods, same result.
Method 1: CurseForge App (Easiest)
- Download the CurseForge app
- Select Hytale as your game
- Browse or search for mods
- Click Install on any mod you want
- Restart your server
The app handles file placement and dependencies.
Method 2: Manual Install
- Download the mod
.zipfrom CurseForge - Drop it into your server’s
modsfolder (don’t extract it) - Restart the server

Hytale Mods vs Minecraft Mods
If you’re coming from Minecraft, here’s how the two compare:
| Hytale | Minecraft | |
|---|---|---|
| Where mods run | Server only | Client + server |
| Player install | Automatic on join | Manual (Forge/Fabric + files) |
| Mod loaders needed | No | Yes (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge) |
| Language | Java (plugins) | Java (Forge/Fabric) |
| Distribution | CurseForge (official) | CurseForge, Modrinth, etc. |
| Client mods | Not available | Full support |
| Ecosystem age | Weeks old | 14+ years |
The biggest win for Hytale is the player experience. No more mod loader installations, no version conflicts, no “your Forge version doesn’t match.” Players just join and play.
The biggest loss is client-side customization. Minecraft lets you install shaders, resource packs, and personal UI mods regardless of what server you’re on. Hytale doesn’t support that yet.
For server owners comparing the two platforms, Hytale’s approach means less support overhead. You don’t need to tell players how to install anything. They connect and your mods just work.
Common Issues with Hytale Mods
The modding ecosystem is still very young. Some problems players and modders have reported:
- Mod conflicts on servers. Running too many mods or incompatible mods can cause crashes. Test mods one at a time when adding to a server.
- Documentation gaps. Official modding docs are incomplete. Community resources like HytaleModding.dev help, but expect some trial and error.
- Data loss risks. Some mods have caused world corruption. Always back up your worlds before adding or removing mods.
- CurseForge browsing. The search and filtering on CurseForge could be better. Sorting by “Most Downloaded” is your best bet for finding quality mods.
For server stability in general, make sure you’re running the latest Hytale update. Hypixel has been pushing patches every few days that improve server stability.
FAQ
Do I need to install mods to play on a modded server?
No. Mods download automatically when you join. You don’t need to do anything on your end.
Can I use mods in singleplayer?
Yes. The easiest way is through the CurseForge app. Or drop mod files manually into %appdata%/Hytale/UserData/Mods/ and enable them from the world menu.
Are Hytale mods free?
The vast majority are free on CurseForge. Some mod creators accept donations, but paid mods aren’t a standard practice.
Will client-side mods ever be supported?
Hypixel hasn’t confirmed this. The current focus is on server-side modding. Client mods may come later, but there’s no timeline.
How do I create my own mods?
