Is Hytale on Steam? Why Not & Where to Buy It
Hytale is not on Steam. Here's why Hypixel Studios skipped it, where to buy Hytale instead, all three editions with prices, and the refund policy.
No, Hytale is not on Steam. The game launched on January 13, 2026, exclusively through its own launcher at store.hytale.com. There’s no Steam page, no wishlist button, and no confirmed plans to bring it there.
So where do you actually buy it, why did Hypixel skip Steam, and will it ever show up there? All of that is covered below.
Why Isn’t Hytale on Steam?
Hypixel Studios gave several reasons for skipping Steam. Executive Director Patrick “Lyall” Derbic laid them out in the official FAQ before launch:
1. Protecting the Early Access period. Derbic said the team wanted to “spend our time in Early Access working with our existing community to improve the game.” Bringing Hytale to Steam at launch could have meant “a flood of cold first impressions that could overcorrect the game’s direction.” Translation: they didn’t want review bombing from people who don’t understand the game is unfinished.
2. Steam doesn’t support all of Hytale’s modding features. This is a big one. Hytale’s modding system, including tools like the Visual Node Editor for world generation, goes beyond what Steam Workshop currently handles. Hypixel said they plan to “discuss this with Valve to see what’s possible,” but for now, the mismatch is a dealbreaker.
3. Revenue. Valve takes up to 30% of every sale on Steam. By selling through their own store, Hypixel keeps that money. For an indie studio (even one backed by Riot Games), that’s significant.
4. Control. Running their own launcher means faster updates, direct access to players, and no platform restrictions on how they distribute patches or test builds.
Will Hytale Ever Come to Steam?
Maybe. But don’t hold your breath.
Derbic put it this way: “Steam is a great platform and marketing tool, but one that we might never need.” He also added: “This doesn’t mean Hytale will never be on Steam; right now, we don’t see the need for it.”
So the door is open, but there’s no timeline, no announcement, and no indication it’s being actively worked on.
If you’re waiting specifically for a Steam release before buying, you could be waiting a long time, or forever. The game is fully playable right now through the Hytale launcher.
Where to Buy Hytale (Step by Step)
Since Hytale isn’t on Steam, here’s how to get it:
- Go to store.hytale.com
- Choose your edition (see pricing below)
- Create a Hytale account or log in
- Complete your purchase
- Download the Hytale Launcher
- Install and play
Payment methods include credit/debit cards and PayPal. Regional pricing is available depending on your country. Before you check out, see if there’s a creator code you can use to support your favorite content creator.
Hytale Editions and Prices
The price of Hytale starts at $19.99. There are three editions, and all of them are limited to the Early Access period. Once Hytale leaves Early Access, these bundles won’t be sold anymore. You can upgrade between tiers by paying the difference.
| Edition | Price | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $19.99 | Full game + Voyager, Savanna, and Forest Guardian cosmetic sets + Forest Guardian Cape |
| Supporter | $34.99 | Everything in Standard + Featherbound, Scavenger, Arctic Scout sets + Knight Cape + Explorer Goggles |
| Cursebreaker | $69.99 | Everything above + Hope of Gaia, Void Hero, Pop Star, Voidbearer sets + Royal Emissary and New Beginning capes |
The cosmetics are exclusive to these editions. If you want them, buy during Early Access.
Hytale’s Refund Policy vs Steam
Here’s something that works in Hytale’s favor. The refund policy is actually more generous than Steam’s:
| Steam | Hytale | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to request | 14 days from purchase | 14 days from purchase |
| Playtime limit | Under 2 hours | Under 4 hours |
Double the playtime window. That’s a real advantage for a game where the first two hours barely scratch the surface.
One caveat: Hytale’s launcher doesn’t track playtime, so it’s on the honor system. Another: some payment methods don’t support refunds. Check the Hytale refund policy page for details.
Can You Play Hytale on Steam Deck?
Hytale has a native Linux build, and SteamOS is Arch Linux under the hood, so the game can technically run on Steam Deck. That said, Hypixel Studios has said Steam Deck is “not officially recommended” right now for two reasons: there’s no controller support yet, and the team hasn’t tested Proton compatibility.
If you want to try it anyway, you’ll need to switch to Desktop Mode, download the launcher from hytale.com, and plug in a keyboard and mouse. One dev confirmed getting “well playable results in local singleplayer” on a Deck with a docking station attached.
If you want it to show up in your Steam Deck’s game library, you can add the Hytale launcher as a non-Steam game (see FAQ below).
Platform Availability
Right now, Hytale is available on:
- Windows
- macOS
- Linux
Console versions (PS5, Xbox) are planned for later, likely after the game leaves Early Access and hits its 1.0 release.
Hytale Launcher Issues (Common Fixes)
The biggest downside of not being on Steam is the launcher. Steam’s infrastructure handles downloads, updates, and troubleshooting behind the scenes. Hytale’s launcher is newer and still has rough edges.
Common problems players have reported:
- Downloads getting stuck during patching. Try restarting the launcher or checking your internet connection.
- “INTERNAL_ERROR” during installation. Run the launcher as administrator.
- Launcher won’t open. Make sure your system meets the minimum requirements and your OS is up to date.
- Authentication failures. Sync your system clock (seriously, this fixes it) or try disabling IPv6.
For more fixes, check the latest hotfix notes since Hypixel has been patching launcher issues regularly.
Other Big Games Not on Steam
Hytale isn’t the first major game to skip Steam. It’s actually a growing trend:
- Minecraft uses its own launcher (and it’s the best-selling game of all time)
- League of Legends runs through the Riot Client
- Fortnite is an Epic Games Store exclusive
- EA games were pulled from Steam for years before eventually returning
The Minecraft comparison is especially relevant since Hytale was born from the Hypixel Minecraft server. If Minecraft never needed Steam, Hytale might not either.
How Hytale Is Doing Without Steam
Despite skipping Steam, Hytale’s launch was massive. Reports suggest 2.8 million players on day one (though a Reddit moderator noted the source of that number wasn’t fully verified). The game hit #1 most-watched on Twitch during launch week, pulling over 420,000 concurrent viewers.
More importantly, Hypixel Studios co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme confirmed that pre-purchase revenue secured funding for at least two years of development. The game doesn’t need Steam’s discoverability to survive.
That said, some players worry about long-term growth. Steam is where a lot of people discover new games, and without it, Hytale relies more heavily on word of mouth, YouTube, and its existing community. For now, though, the player base is healthy, the updates are coming fast, and there’s no sign of slowdown.
FAQ
Is there a Hytale Steam page?
No. There’s no Steam store page, no wishlist, and no listing of any kind.
Can I add Hytale to my Steam library as a non-Steam game?
Yes. In Steam, go to Games > Add a Non-Steam Game > Browse to the Hytale launcher. This lets you use Steam overlay and track playtime, but you won’t get achievements or Steam features.
Will my progress transfer if Hytale comes to Steam later?
Unknown. Hypixel hasn’t addressed this since a Steam release isn’t planned. Your account is tied to Hytale’s own system, not any external platform.
How much does Hytale cost?
$19.99 for the Standard edition, $34.99 for Supporter, $69.99 for Cursebreaker. All editions include the full game.
