Hytale Thorium: Where to Find It, All Recipes & Why It's Worth It - Hytale guide

Thorium is found in Zone 2’s Howling Sands desert. A full set gives you 75% poison resistance, which makes the difference between dying to every snake in the desert and barely noticing them. It’s the first mid-game armor most players should craft.

Why Bother With Thorium?

Zone 2 is crawling with venomous creatures. Snakes, scorpions, poisonous insects everywhere. Without poison resistance, you’ll burn through food and die to things that should be minor threats.

A full Thorium armor set gives you 75% total poison resistance, turning those snake bites from a death sentence into a minor annoyance. That alone makes it worth farming before you push deeper.

Thorium vs Cobalt

Some players ask whether they should skip Thorium and wait for Cobalt. Both have identical base defense and damage stats. The difference is in their set bonuses and how easy they are to craft.

Thorium is the practical choice. You’ll find it first, craft it easier, and the poison resistance keeps you alive while you’re still in Zone 2. Get Thorium first, then farm Cobalt when you’re ready for Zone 3.

Where to Find & Farm Thorium

Thorium spawns exclusively in Zone 2: Howling Sands (the desert biome south of Emerald Grove). You won’t find it in the starting zone. Small deposits also show up in Zone 3’s frosty regions, but the desert is your best farming spot.

Look for bright green ore on cliff faces and inside caves. It stands out against the brown sandstone.

Surface Farming (Faster)

  1. Open your map and locate a large desert area
  2. Look for tall mountains with exposed stone faces
  3. Walk along mountain edges at eye level. Veins are often visible without digging
  4. Circle mountains horizontally rather than climbing straight up

You can spot veins from a distance on the surface, so scan cliff faces before committing to a cave run.

Cave Farming (More Ore)

  1. Find a desert cave entrance
  2. Bring torches. Thorium’s green glow helps, but caves get dark
  3. Check cave ceilings in sandstone formations
  4. Mark your path to avoid getting lost

Caves have denser ore spawns but take longer to navigate.

Tips While Farming

  • Bring repair kits. Your pickaxe will wear down fast
  • Use a horse. Cuts travel time significantly
  • Set up a desert outpost. Place a chest and teleporter near your farming spot
  • Farm Venom Sacs in parallel. Kill snakes and scorpions while hunting for ore. You’ll need them for crafting anyway

All Ways to Get Thorium

Mining is the main method, but it’s not the only one.

Mining - Any pickaxe works, but Iron or better is recommended for speed. Mine the green ore blocks, smelt them in a Furnace, and you get Thorium Ingots.

Ore Turtles (Renewable) - Rare creatures that wander Zone 2 mountain areas with Thorium ore growing on their shells. Mine the ore carefully without killing them and it regrows over time. Free infinite Thorium if you can find one.

Burnt Skeleton Praetorians - These enemies drop Thorium Ingots directly. Find them in the Devastated Lands or some Emerald Wilds encampments.

NPC Villages - Occasionally contain Thorium Swords or Pickaxes you can loot.

Warning: Don’t mine Thorium in Creative Mode. There’s a bug where pickaxes destroy the blocks instead of harvesting them.

Crafting Thorium Gear

You can’t craft Thorium gear on basic workbenches. You need Tier 2 versions of each station.

Other Thorium Uses

Beyond gear, Thorium Ingots are used in two important recipes.

Arcanist’s Workbench - The magic crafting station needs 10 Thorium Ingots + 30 Linen Scraps + 20 Essence of Void. This unlocks teleporters, staffs, and magical totems.

Windrider Valley Fragment Key - 10 Thorium Ingots + 30 Essence of Life. This lets you visit Fragments of Orbis and experience World Gen V2 content. Check out our World Gen V2 guide for more details.
